Warehousing options for your grain stocks
White Maize Grain represents a common form of wealth. It is a key food commodity, and perhaps one of the more secure ways to preserve food value due to lower perishability when compared to other non grain foods. Secondly, due to seasonal variations (covered in our earlier post), maize grain remains one of the highly exchangeable commodities for cash, and a top traded commodity in local and regional food markets.
The best return to grain commodities are realised the longer after harvest good quality is maintained, and therefore, any holder of grain would want to keep it viable (good for food, free of insects, moulds and other matter) , for instance, five months in store. However safe ways to maintain this wealth (or stock) are very limited in the ordinary farm and community space because the ideal storage facilities do not exist. Therefore, the decision to hold grain stock is not favoured by many who could otherwise invest in commodities.

In Uganda, alone, white maize grain yields were 6.16 million metric ton in 2021, with 60% of this product achieved in season I (January – June) and 40% in the second season. An estimated 2.5 million metric ton is exported (usually around season harvest) through formal trade, and a substantial amount also exported informally. Foreign and local buyers are not restricted from direct access to farms and rural stores, and therefore farm gate or store-gate prices are a proximate reflection of actual market prices.
Our stainless steel silos are now available to provide affordable and reliable storage for white maize grain for farmers and stockists. Silo rental is as basic a practice as renting a store room, except with the additional grain safety features.
Before acceptance into storage, your grain consignment undergoes some checks to ensure it does not pose a threat to other consignments. The company endeavors to conduct both physical (visual, smell, feel) and non-physical checks. We look out for insect infestation, filth and effluents, moulds, small grain size, diseased / discolored seeds, high moisture , stress cracks, as the priority checks.
We have an industrial grade electronic weigh bridge to measure all inbound and outbound cargo. A high speed sorter/cleaner ensures only good grade beans are delivered into the drier assembly for moisture reduction, before the grain is deposited into the steel silo for storage. This largely human-free system, also eliminates error due to emotion and human weakness, and ensures the least possible loss of poundage.
A warehouse receipt is issued for each consignment admitted into storage. This is the formal contract between the company and the grain depositor. It details all aspects of the parties engaged in the transaction, the grain parameters (weight, value at deposit date, moisture) as well as the fees due to the company for services rendered.
